Blended Blues - Oil on Canvas - 12"x24"

Blended blues are a part of every artist’s repertoire. Almost all the artists I have met and seen their works have a blended blues in their collection. And why not? These gradients are so beautiful and easy on the eye that it is hard for most artists refuse to part with thier primary creations. Blue compositions are taught to budding artists to best understand perspective. I never quite understood that until I met a painter, many years back, who showed me his lessons in art. They were blue – in many shades possible and the gradient did give the composition some depth and perspective. Hmmm, I kind of learnt my lesson then.

It may look down right easy to blend in different shades of blues, but the painter alone knows how those shades and hues surfaced on the canvas, amongst the million options to chose from. The color of the skies, seas, sadness, twilight and more, there is no person on Earth who does not like a shade or two – of blue.

“Of all the colours, blue and green have the greatest emotional range. Sad reds and melancholy yellows are difficult to turn up.”
William H Gass

Blended blues was made recently as a respite from the fiery artworks that were coming out more often. A calming sight, as it dried, this painting stood at the same spot for many days. A soothing rectangle to look at when nothing seemed to work.

Again, the photo is not a true representation of the painting as it does not show the actual strokes and colors. The Blues include Prussian, Cerulean hue, Cobalt and a hint of Turquoise, on a white base. Blended from shallow to deep and from darkness to light, these blues but will always be close to my heart. They now hang on a blue-lover’s wall.

“Colour and I are one. I am a painter.”
Paul Klee

There is no abstract art.
You must always start with something.
Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.
Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973)

Thats what Picasso said eons ago. I tried him.

I tried removing all the traces of reality in my landscape… but how can you not see nature in this. The azure skies, green flora and deep earth… all resplendent and suggestive that no matter how much you erase… nature is everywhere. Even in the unseen.

This painting is far distant from what I had in mind when I started. Yes, it was supposed to be a landscape and it still is – starting with the skies and goes deep within earth.

Hours went by, but it didn’t feel right. I repeatedly moved the colors around on the canvas till I could understand the need. Indeed, I had to remove all the traces of reality – of all that I could see and all that I wanted to do.

Layer upon layer, the colors kept merging with one another to reach this stage, what I call as pure peace. The End.

Green being my favorite color, I can never have enough of it. My last two paintings, deep forest and the refuge I seek, have these shades of green to its best. Some shades of green are so much in your system that you dont feel done unless you have used them.

I have used five shades of green in this painting. They merge so beautifully that it looks like one color in all its glory. Every time I squeezed a bit of new green color on palette, I wondered what I was upto or rather what the painting was upto. I had no idea it would turn out this sublime, misty and mysterious. The photograph of this abstract art does not convey enough.

I am loving every inch of it, it as it dries. And the one thing I have learnt with this scented landscape is that you can never go wrong with green – the color of life.

It all happens when you get restless. All you need are few tubes of colors, brushes or knives and a canvas to sate. This painting was done one fine afternoon when there was many other pressing things to do. But it had to sprout. Else, nothing else could have been possible.

Deep Rooted (12 x 12) in oils, is now hung to dry.

This is my most cherished and most loved painting; for Mother Theresa is whom we look upto. I had come across this picture long time back in a magazine and could never let go of the image from my mind. I painted it with a faint memory of what I remembered. I do not paint much in watercolors these days but loved the effect.

I loved it then. I still love it. Nothing compares to her; her heart and soul. She will always be my chosen muse. This painting was my first gift to my husband. This painting is now the soul of our home.
